California

Anaheim: Scandinavian Dance Classes

Los Gatos: Barneleikarring (Children's Norwegian Dance) classes

Mountain View: Nordahl Grieg Leikarring Performance Group

Nordahl Grieg Leikarring meets Wednesdays at Masonic Hall, 980 Church St. in Mountain View, 7:00-9:30 p.m. Location subject to change. Oakland: Scandia 2nd Saturday

Scandia 2nd Saturday Monthly Dance usually meets at Oakland Nature Friends, 3115 Butters Drive in Oakland. Location may vary. Usually does not meet in February, June or July. Cost $7. Oakland: Traveling Dance Class

Palo Alto: Nordic Footnotes Scandinavian Dance Party

Nordic Footnotes 1st Saturday Scandinavian Dance Party takes place at the First United Methodist Church, 625 Hamilton Ave, Palo Alto. Other locations for July and August. Palo Alto: Scandinavian fiddle class

Sacremento: Scandinavian Dance Class

Scandinavian Dance Class meets Mondays over seasonal, six-week sessions, 7 - 9:30 pm at Hamilton Street Park Community Center, Hamilton Street in Sacramento. Canada

Vancouver, British Columbia

Scandinavian Dancers of Vancouver dance on Wednesday evenings at the Scandinavian Community Centre in Burnaby starting at 7:30. But, 2nd Wednesdays will be "Live Music" nights at a different location. Drop-in fee for non-members is $5.00. Teaching runs from 7:30 to 8:45 followed by refreshments and dancing until 10 pm. The Scandinavian Community Centre is located at 6540 Thomas Street in Burnaby V5B 4P9. Boulder: Scandinavian Dancing

Swedish and Norwegian dancing to live and recorded music at Pearl Street Studio, 2126 Pearl Street in Boulder. No partner necessary; admission $5. Chicago: Chicagoland Scandinavian Turning Dance Classes

Basics instruction is 6 - 7 pm, intermediate instruction begins around 7:15 pm, social dancing follows instruction; $6 admission. Meets most Sunday evenings, November through May, at St. Lukes Presbyterian Church, located in the southwestern suburbs of Chicagoland at 3910 Highland Avenue in Downers Grove, Illinois. Takoma Park: Mid-Atlantic Norwegian Dancers

Usually 1st or 2nd Saturday of month, except July. Location varies around the region. House parties with potluck and informal teaching at 6:30, then dancing starting around 8:00. Arlington: Arlington Norwegian Dance

Live music for dancing, third weekend Fridays, September through June, 8 to 11 pm at the Church of Our Saviour, 21 Marathon Street in Arlington, Massachusetts. $7 donation. Halling antics ("free dance" play time!) begin around 7:30. Singles, families, and dancers with all levels of experience are welcome! No partner necessary. Minneapolis: Scandinavian Social Dances

Omaha Scandinavian Folk Dancers meets most Wednesdays at the Scandinavian American Societies Building, located at 7575 Crown Point in Omaha, Nebraska. The event is free, and open to everyone who wants to dance, play, watch, or listen--whether you're experienced or just interested. Albuquerque: Norwegian and Swedish Dancing

Swedish and Norwegian gammaldanser (schottis, waltz, hambo, polka), polskor, and bygdedanser (regional dances) are taught for dancing to recorded music. No partner necessary. Beginners welcome. New York

Ithaca: Norwegian and Swedish Dancing

We have a regular monthly dance on the first Saturday of every month at the home of Franzisca Bayer. Swedish and Norwegian dancing with live music. E-mail Laurie Hart for more information and for directions.

New York: Scandia New York

Dancing with live music every Wednesday at the Town and Village Synagogue, 334 East 14th Street, NYC (between 1st and 2nd Aves). Dances taught include gammaldans favorites (schottis, waltz, hambo, polka), and featured polskas or other bygdedans (regional dance) variations from Sweden and Norway. Teaching for beginners is 7 pm to 8 pm; dancing is 8 pm to 10:30 pm. Admission is $8 and light refreshments served. Please bring clean, leather soled shoes with low heels for dancing. Washington

Lynnwood: Skandia Folkdance

First and third Fridays of each month at the Cedar Valley Grange, located at 20526 52nd Avenue West in Lynnwood. Dances are taught from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., followed by open dancing until 11:30. Poulsbo: Nordic dance

Regular Monday evening Nordic dancing with instruction begins at 7 p.m. at the Sons of Norway Lodge in Poulsbo (18891 Front Street). Beginners are welcome, no partner needed, and a donation of $2 a person is requested. Information: Fred (206) 780-3036 or Stan (360) 779-2460.


Seattle: Beyond the Basics Scandinavian

Dance classes will be on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Room 7 of the Phinney Neighborhood Center, located at 6532 Phinney Ave N in Seattle. Room 7 is located in the main building, next to the upper parking lot. Skandia members - $6/session or $25 for the series. Non-members - $8/session or $35 for the series. Seattle: Fifth Friday Dance

Skandia Folkdance Society's Fifth Friday Dance is 8 - 11 pm at the Epiphany Chapel, located at 1805 38th Avenue in Seattle, Washington. The 5th Friday dances focus on bygde-dance, the "village" couples' dances that are the most popular with folk dancers in Norway and Sweden. The event features Hardanger fiddling from Bill Boyd and Peter Michaelsen, plus pols, polska, and other tunes played on the regular fiddle. There is no teaching. The cost is $9 (Skandia members, $7). Seattle: Leif Erikson Leikarringen

Leikarringen rehearsals take place on Tuesdays at 7:30 to 9:30 pm on the 2nd floor of the Sons of Norway Leif Erikson Lodge #1. The first Tuesday of every month is party night! Leikarringen is looking for new members to join the group. Teenagers and adults of all ages and abilities are welcome at rehearsals. Participation in performances is not required. The Leif Erikson Lodge is located at 2245 NW 57th Street in Seattle. There is no attendance fee. Madison: Madison Area Spelemannslag (Fykerud'n Spelemannslag)

The Madison and Southern Wisconsin Area now has a monthly meeting of Hardanger fiddlers. We try to learn a tune a month by ear, although transcriptions are available.
