2005 Annual Workshop

Program

All activities took place at Folklore Village, located in a peaceful, rural area about seven miles east of Dodgeville, WI and about a 35-minute drive west of Madison, WI. The beautiful, air-conditioned main hall includes a spacious sprung wooden dance floor and separate classrooms for fiddle instruction.

Workshops

There are approximately six hours of instruction per day.

Hardingfele. All hardingfele classes are small, with lots of opportunity for individual attention. You need not have played hardingfele or Scandinavian fiddle before, but you should have some solid fiddling skills. It helps to have some degree of proficiency in learning by ear, although this is not a requirement (some written music will be available).

Fiddlers who would like to try hardingfele but do not have an instrument are welcome. Please indicate on the registration form that you would like to borrow an instrument (or indicate if you have one to lend). If you have no fiddling experience, but think you might be interested, you are welcome to audit the beginner’s class.

Dance. The HFAA does not set any gender limitations or experience pre-requisites for our dance workshops. All are welcome to come and learn the HFAA way! Dance students will have the opportunity to dance to live fiddle music and to learn more about it. Individual instruction will be tailored to both beginning and experienced dancers. Also included are special lectures on dance traditions, videotapes, and question-and-answer sessions.

NOTE: The hardingfele and dance classes are taught concurrently. If a student desires to take classes in both fiddling and dancing, it is recommended that he or she sign up for fiddling on Friday and dancing on Saturday. Our instructors will try to accommodate Saturday-only enrollees. It is highly recommended, however, that students attend both the Friday and Saturday sessions, since Saturday's work builds on work done on Friday.

Kveding. Carol Sersland and Hege Ravdal lead two kveding (Norwegian-style singing) workshops, on Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon. They are open to anyone who is looking for an alternative to dance or fiddle workshops. The singers are a friendly, inclusive group. Sing for fun. Carol and Hege will bring recordings of their favorite singers and teach some simple tunes as well.

And More...

Lectures and demonstrations on all aspects of Norwegian folk music and dance will occur during the workshops.

Private, 20-minute coaching sessions with the hardingfele teachers are scheduled throughout the weekend to help you solve your personal fiddling challenges.

Dance parties. Every evening there will be a dance party. Musicians are invited to play for dancing. Dancing includes not only Valdressringar but also gammeldans and dances from the other valleys.

Saturday evening begins with a sumptuous Scandinavian smorgasbord. Those who choose to do so wear their national costumes. After the banquet, a concert follows that features our master teachers. The evening continues with a dance party for all.

Children are most welcome at HFAA! Children who can participate in music and dance activities are welcome in the workshops. There are no childcare facilities available, so parents should be prepared to watch their children and work cooperatively with other parents. Advanced registration is required for all children. Teenagers without parents attending are welcome but they must have a chaperone. Please contact us to make arrangements.

Schedule

All fiddling activities take place in the basement. All dance activities take place in the dance hall or schoolhouse. Note: Private lessons are available every day for Hardanger fiddlers (see times below). Sign up at the registration desk for 20-minute slots.
